Helping to grow the game is one of our goals here at XHockeyProducts and with social media sites like Facebook and Twitter, hockey fans are connecting like never before. The number of people becoming fans of our game continues to rise and thanks to events like the 2012 Central Division Tweet-Up, which is being held on July 28th in Columbus, Ohio, hockey fans that are connected through social media will have the opportunity to meet in person, share stories and raise money for some great causes.
Columbus resident and the newest member of the XHockeyProducts blog team, Rick Gethin, is organizing the event that will bring together fans of the five Central Division teams – the Columbus Blue Jackets, St. Louis Blues, Chicago Blackhawks, Nashville Predators and the Detroit Red Wings.
“I’ve been passionate about hockey since I was kid,” Rick explained. “Growing up southeast of Buffalo, NY, I was able to watch both the Buffalo Sabres and the Toronto Maple Leafs on television and listen to both teams on the radio. Having a pond in our backyard made for great games of ‘shinny’ during the winter – although, I was never very good.”
“The idea for the 2012 CDTU came about during a late night of good-natured back and forth with Kristopher Martel – he writes The Predatorial blog in Nashville. It all started as a joke in March 2012, ‘We should do a Central Division tweet-up’ was said with laughter. But I wondered, what if we did it? Kris and I brainstormed about what it would take to make this event happen and ‘voila!’, four months later our hard work is about to come to fruition.”
In creating the event, Rick and Kris saw an opportunity to not only celebrate the game, but to spread the word about the five Central Division Team Foundations and the NHL Alumni Association. All six organizations have donated items that will be raffled throughout the day, with 100% of the proceeds going back to the Foundations and the NHL Alumni. The list of donated items is impressive – signed jerseys from Pekka Rinne and Rick Nash, a stick signed by Chicago’s Niklas Hjalmarsson, pucks signed by Pavel Datsyuk and Brendan Shanahan, an NHL Alumni jersey with 28 signatures (Doug Gilmour, Denis Savard, Bryan Trottier and Darryl Sittler to name a few), and other assorted items as well.
“Kris and I both thought that getting together fans of the five Central Division clubs and fans of the game of hockey would be a fun time in the middle of the hockey doldrums, which is also known as summer,” Rick said. “Raising money for the charities is the right thing to do. They all do so much that is never really made public and we wanted to tie-in our event by helping to raise awareness about all of the great work that they do.”
“All of the information about this one-of-a-kind event is on our Facebook page (2012 CDTU), but in a nutshell, we will be having raffles all afternoon/evening at two locations with the autographed memorabilia from the five Central Division clubs and the autographed hockey sweater from the NHL Alumni Association. There will be music, food and fun smack talk with all of the fans attending. Besides, with talk of realignment, we don’t know how much longer the Central Division will consist of these five clubs.”
With music provided by Columbus Blue Jackets in-arena DJ Nick Johnson, videos highlighting all five teams and the NHL Alumni, a great lineup of raffle prizes and the opportunity to meet new friends and share your passion for the game we all love, the 2012 Central Division Tweet-Up is sure to be a great success!
